Blackout Review

Updated: May 25, 2023

Blackout is a compilation of stories written by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon. We find our characters stuck in New York City during a major blackout, forcing them to open up to and about things they may not otherwise have. I read the physical book and listened to the audiobook and was impressed by both versions. I highlighted so many quotes in the physical book and the voice actors for the audiobook were incredible.

I very much enjoyed following so many different characters facing their own battles, experiences, or every day occurrences. The representation of LGBTQ+ lives was wonderful with real life seeming to mix into what those within the community hope to experience regarding acceptance and love. I made a list of types of highlights I wanted to tab while reading, which included: happy/funny, speaks to my soul, love, sad, and beautiful writing. I highlighted each of those types of moments almost completely evenly, with the exception of "sad," which I am completely okay with. These were love stories and it was nice to read mostly about joy.

The dedication, "To Black kids everywhere: your stories, your joy, your love, and your lives matter. You are a light in the dark," is one of the most heartfelt dedications I have ever read. This book is important. It depicts stories of love, of joy, of so many things for people who are often not represented in the media a lot of us consume. These authors spoke to human connection, to truth, and above all, to love.

Contemporary romance is not my typical genre, but I was drawn in by the summary and really enjoyed my read of this book. The short stories connect toward the end and leave themselves open a little bit to what could happen next. Open endings are not always welcomed, but I feel this was very appropriate as it reinforces the idea that life can go so many different ways.

Let me know what you think when you read it.

- "I don't think I've done anything exceptional. I'm too used to being the one who gets saved, not the one who does the saving. But when she looks at me the way she's looking at me right now, like I'm some kind of hero, I can't help but feel a little heroic."

- "So I collect Joss' compliments like shiny pennies found on the ground: pocketed for safekeeping. They're pretty, and nice to have, but worth very little."

- "His eyes scan my face. "Of all the things you can remember, you can't put two and two together and know how much I love you? How much it's always been you?""
