Chapter Plotting Resource

sarahsilverbergm

After about twenty different versions of chapter plotting documents (hand drawn, post it covered posters, digital, etc.), I finally landed on using this template. It works for a wide range of stories and focuses on the main plot with one subplot. That's not to say you couldn't have more (in the future, I plan on making other versions!). This document helps keep me focused and to see the overall flow of my book. Sometimes I number the squares, but typically I find that I end up moving chapters around, so there's no reason to number them right away. Big squares are for the main plot and small rectangles are for the subplot. I also like color coding to match POVs or timelines, but that's completely up to you! I've included a condensed example in addition to the PDFs you can print and fill in yourself. I hope this helps you get started! It's simple, but has helped me so much.
